World IN BRIEF : ZAMBIA : 8 Rwanda Genocide Suspects Arrested
Zambia said it has arrested eight Rwandan exiles suspected of taking part in last year’s genocide in their homeland. It was the first such crackdown by an African country. “We arrested eight of them, and we shall hold them until the U.N. [war crimes] tribunal is ready to receive them,†a Zambian official said, adding that security officers are hunting other Rwandans. The eight were arrested last week after the Zambian government finished studying a joint U.N.-Rwandan government list of suspects, the official said. The U.N. tribunal is to try ringleaders accused of organizing the massacre of at least 500,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutu allies last year.
