COLLEGE ROUNDUP : 49ers Beat UCI in Volleyball
UC Irvine came out strong against Long Beach State to win the first game, but the 49ers quickly regrouped and came back to win the Big West Conference women’s volleyball match, 12-15, 16-14, 15-13, 15-10, Wednesday night at Long Beach State.
Behind the offensive play of Popi Edwards, who had 24 kills in the match, the Anteaters beat Long Beach State in the first game. The lead was short-lived, though, as Long Beach State, which had four players in double figures in kills, won the next three games.
Brita Schwerm had 23 kills to lead Long Beach State (10-2, 6-1).
UC Irvine is 3-10, 1-6.
In nonconference women’s soccer:
UCLA 1, Cal State Fullerton 0--Traci Arkenberg scored the only goal off an indirect free kick from Louise Lieberman in the 85th minute. UCLA (8-1-2) outshot Fullerton, 10-9.
Goalie Suzy Strazzulla had five saves for Fullerton (7-2).
