Vern Benard expects to become the first football player at Bell to receive a scholarship to a Division I college since 1978. The 5-11, 170-pound senior plays running back, defensive back and on special teams and has rushed for 650 yards. He is also an accomplished outfielder and sprinter in the spring. His brother, Marvin, is an outfielder for the San Francisco Giants.
