ROUNDUP : Sylmar Girls Finally Defeat Van Nuys

Anne Guevarra had 19 kills and eight digs, and Patty Mendoza added 15 kills and six digs to help Sylmar High beat Van Nuys for the first time, 15-10, 8-15, 9-15, 15-10, 15-11, in a Valley Pac-8 Conference girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Sylmar.

Sylmar (4-0, 2-0 in conference play) won its 15th consecutive match dating to last season.

The Spartans were 16-1 and won the City Section 3-A Division title last season, but their lone loss came to Van Nuys.

The Wolves are 3-2, 1-1.

North Hollywood d. Monroe, 15-8, 15-1, 9-15, 15-7--Gohar Karapogosyan had nine kills for the Huskies (3-2, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match.

Christine Hauser and Samantha Fargeon each had eight kills, and Takui Karapogosyan had 20 assists for North Hollywood.

Burroughs d. Burbank, 15-5, 15-0, 15-2--Christy Russell had 10 kills for the Indians (6-2) in a Foothill League opener.

Notre Dame d. Louisville, 15-5, 15-7, 17-15--Kathryn Martin had 15 kills, 17 digs and three blocks for the Knights (7-0) in a Mission league opener.

Hilda Osmanian added 31 assists for Notre Dame.

Louisville fell to 2-5.

Bishop Diego d. Oak Park, 15-11, 12-15, 15-12, 15-9--Rheana Mantooth had 12 kills and Lorianne Belmont added 25 assists for Oak Park (6-1) in a Tri-Valley League opener.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Harvard-Westlake 26, Alemany 9--Rick Rauth scored six goals in a Mission League match to lead the Wolverines (8-1, 3-0) to their fourth consecutive victory.

Peter Hudnut added four goals for Harvard, which is ranked fifth in Southern Section Division I.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Lutheran d. Redlands, 15-5, 15-5, 15-4--Liz Martinez had six kills and Tracy Little added 20 assists in a SCIAC match at Cal Lutheran as the Regals (12-1, 2-0) registered their 11th consecutive victory.

Darcy White added four kills and 16 assists for Cal Lutheran, which is ranked seventh in NCAA Division III.

Leslie Ferguson was one of three players with four kills for Redlands (4-12, 1-2). She also had 20 assists.
