Detroit Strike to Cost Knight-Ridder Inc. 50 Cents a Share: Ross Jones, chief financial officer of the Miami-based media company, said the strike at its Detroit Free Press would reduce third-quarter earnings but that “fourth-quarter results will be significantly better.” Six unions representing 2,500 workers struck the Free Press and Gannett Co.’s Detroit News on July 13, citing pay and staffing issues. Knight-Ridder said it and Gannett are publishing an average of 750,000 weekday newspapers and 1.05 million on Sunday, contrasted with the 912,000 weekday copies and 1.17 million on Sunday before the strike.
