ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Forero Leads Way in 21-0 Edison Victory
LONG BEACH — A 200-yard rushing game was the goal senior running back Alex Forero had set for himself. And his Edison teammates promised to open the holes.
Forero reached his objective . . . sort of. He rushed for a game-high 140 yards and had another 70 yards called back on Edison penalties as the Chargers rolled to a 21-0 victory over Long Beach Millikan Friday night.
Forero capped a seven-play, 76-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to give Edison a 7-0 lead.
Edison’s defense set up the Chargers’ second score, recovering a bad-snap fumble on its own 34-yard line. Edison quarterback Jeff Grady quickly moved the team down the field, hitting two clutch third-down passes.
On first and 10 from the Millikan 23, Brodie Riederich ran up the middle for a score and a 14-0 lead.
On Edison’s next series, Forero had a 50-yard scoring run called back on a holding penalty.
Six penalties for 56 yards were the only weaknesses the Chargers showed all night.
Their defense held Millikan to 34 passing yards, sacked the opposing quarterback five times for 35 yards, recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass.
They also contained Millikan running back Andrew Stewart, who gained 138 yards in 26 carries but never reached the end zone.
Forero’s 25-yard burst started a late third-quarter drive that was capped by a 13-yard pass from Grady to Brandon Boerner.
Grady completed 12 of 18 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown.
