WOODLAND HILLS — Only one day earlier, they were awarded a forfeit victory by the Southern Section office.
Then, the members of the Crespi football team went out and nearly awarded themselves an upset victory.
But the Celts, who learned Thursday that last week’s loss to Serra is now a victory because of a violation by the Cavaliers, couldn’t defeat Canyon Springs and fell, 41-34, Friday in a shootout at Pierce College.
Crespi’s Jamian Barbour rushed for 177 yards in 23 carries, but the real story was the Canyon Springs ground game.
The Cougars (1-1) racked up 391 yards on the ground and dominated with their wing-T offense.
Terelle Smith rushed for 174 yards in 26 carries and Kevin Moykey had 155 yards in seven carries for the Cougars, ranked fifth in Division II by Cal-Hi Sports.
Moykey applied the killing blow in the fourth quarter.
Crespi (1-1) pulled to within 35-34 on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Todd McLean to Greg Justin early in the quarter.
But on the Cougars’ next play from scrimmage, Moykey scored on a 78-yard counter play.
“They had gotten so concerned with Terelle pounding inside that they gave us Kevin,” said Canyon Springs Coach Jack Fogarty.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, but the Celts had their chances. They were deep in Canyon Springs territory twice, but came up with nothing.
Their best opportunity came with under three minutes remaining when Canyon Springs punter Ryan Beckwith touched his knee to the ground while fielding a low snap.
Crespi took over on the Cougar 30.
The Celts moved to the 13 on a pass interference penalty, but soon found themselves facing fourth-and-32 after a penalty, a sack and an incomplete pass.
McLean, who completed 10 of 27 passes for 125 yards and three touchdowns, overthrew Ryan Block on fourth down.
Barbour, who scored on runs of 68 and 58 yards, helped keep it close throughout.
“It really tears your heart,” said Barbour, who pulled the Celts into a 14-14 tie in the second quarter with his second touchdown. “I felt we should have won.”
