COSTA MESA : OCC Will Scale Down Homecoming Celebration
Orange Coast College will have fewer banners unfurled for homecoming, and the halftime show will be less elaborate than in years past, but the festivities will go on.
The Student Board of Trustees had considered canceling the event because of poor attendance in recent years, but after weeks of debate voted for a scaled-down celebration.
“There is a lot to say for tradition, and it would have been horrible to stop it now,†said Scott McCarthy, a member of the board who led the campaign to save homecoming. “It also sent out a message that we did not support our athletic teams.â€
McCarthy said the details of the event, coinciding with the college’s Oct. 14 football game, have yet to be worked out. With only $1,800 allocated for halftime activities, he said, down from $5,000 in years past, students and alumni will see a shorter program with fewer frills.
