ADULTS ONLY: “Showgirls,†the first NC-17 picture from a major Hollywood studio in years, may play peekaboo in Orange County, says the head of the Edwards Cinemas chain. The film, to be released next week, is set among erotic dancers and contains much nudity. . . . While the current U.S. News & World Report says cinema baron James Edwards Sr. has already booked the film, he says: “I don’t know where or if it will play here or not. If we play it, it would be in selected upscale areas, and we would strictly enforce the rating system.â€
COMPETITIVE EDGE: While other contestants are putting in 40-hour weeks with personal trainers, for her once-in-a-lifetime shot at the Mrs. America crown in Palm Springs on Saturday night, Mission Viejo resident Lynnda Davis thinks cutting back on snacks is good enough. . . . “I haven’t really put myself on a grueling schedule,†says the 37-year-old Mrs. California. “I feel like my edge is my intelligence. Unlike your figure, that’s something you never lose.â€
UP ON THE ROOF: Extreme mountain biker Hans Rey makes his living as a performer, riding in a variety of amazing ways: up waterfalls, over cars, tanks, trucks, along tree limbs, off 50-foot cliffs. (E1) . . . The 29-year-old’s practice sessions--on the rooftop of his South Laguna home--often astound his neighbors. Says Irini Saul, who lives next door: “We think it’s great. Hans jumped over my son for his bar mitzvah.â€
BIG LEAGUE TIPS: A handful of California Angels players and coaches will take a breather from the pennant race Saturday to share their winning ways with Little Leaguers. “This is a chance for kids to learn from their heroes,†says Mitch Cherness, who has helped organize a free baseball clinic at Buchheim Field in San Juan Capistrano. . . . Registration starts at 9 a.m. and players will autograph souvenirs.
TONIGHT: Manic Hispanic, Just Plain Big, the Codependents and Ron & Nancy play rock at Club 369, 1641 N. Placentia Ave., Fullerton. 9 p.m. (714) 572-1816.
