SAN FRANCISCO — The body of legendary rock hero Jerry Garcia, leader of the Grateful Dead, has been cremated and his ashes will soon be scattered at sea.
Dennis McNally, Garcia’s publicist, said Saturday that plans were to scatter the ashes into the ocean from a boat off Marin County, where the rock star lived for 27 years.
Garcia died Aug. 9 in a Marin County drug treatment center at age 53. Since then, his death has been mourned and his life and music celebrated by hundreds of thousands of Dead fans worldwide.
The publicist said Garcia, an avid scuba diver, requested cremation upon his death and that his ashes be scattered at sea. McNally said the ceremony would be private.
