San Gabriel Valley : Ex-Police Chief Still Owes Pasadena
Former Pasadena Police Chief Jerry A. Oliver still owes a large chunk of a $50,000 city loan he got to buy a house in 1991, city officials say.
Oliver, who left in April to take the top cop job in Richmond, Va., promised in May to pay back the $35,000 he owed on the loan when he sold his Pasadena home.
But now the house in the San Rafael neighborhood will not be sold for 18 months.
Oliver is leasing the house to Barry Gordon, a Democratic congressional candidate and president of the Screen Actors Guild.
Council members are questioning whether the city will ever get its money back.
‘I don’t like the perception here that we’re letting this guy hang on to public funds,†said Councilman Paul Little.
Pasadena City Manager Philip A. Hawkey said Oliver is paying interest on the loan and a new repayment deal is expected to come to the council in the next few weeks.
