RECYCLED CAMPAIGN: Just when opponents of a proposed landfill near Ojai thought the project was buried for good, a new campaign for the Weldon Canyon dump has emerged (B1). . . . Supporters of the landfill filed petition papers Tuesday for a March ballot initiative. . . . Although they lost a legal battle over a similar initiative campaign last year, backers of the dump are confident that they will succeed this time. . . . Said petition organizer Eloise Brown: “I believe common sense will prevail.”
WORLD VIEW: Donating your old prescription glasses can help build needed housing around the world. . . . Vision Habitat, a nationwide nonprofit with a branch in Thousand Oaks, sells the frames from eyeglasses and uses the proceeds to build housing in developing countries. . . . Several businesses and community organizations accept donations for Vision Habitat, including Marcus Slayton’s Thousand Oaks optometry office. “It’s a lot better than throwing your old glasses in the trash,” Slayton said. For information, call 493-3869.
UNDER THE GUN: Forget burglar alarms and security cameras. For Thousand Oaks resident Ron Oatman, there’s nothing better than his trusty .38-caliber handgun when it comes to protecting his home and family (B1). . . . Oatman had hoped, however, that he would never have to actually use the firearm. . . . But when an intruder broke into his home Monday night, Oatman said he had little choice. He shot and wounded the man. . . . “It’s a lot harder to shoot someone than you’d think,” he said.
RACING HERO: Two-time Indy 500 winner Roger Ward, a Castaic resident, urged Ventura council members Monday night to support a major entertainment center that would include a raceway (B1). . . . Council members said they favor plans for the center, but do not want the city to finance the project. . . . Meanwhile, Councilman Steve Bennett said he was happy to see Ward at the meeting: “I grew up in Indianapolis. You were my hero.”
