PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AFC : Broncos’ Sharpe May Have to Retire

Denver Bronco tight end Shannon Sharpe said he might retire after the 1995 season if his chronic ankle and knee pain do not subside.
“It’s not a matter of how much longer I want to play--it’s how much more can my body take,” Sharpe said. “I’m only 27, but look at what I’ve gone through. My body feels like I’m 40. That’s not good.”
During the off-season, Sharpe underwent surgery on both ankles.
“This year is a real key. If I can come out and stay healthy this year, I like my chances to play further,” he said. “But if I get banged up like I have been the last two years, I don’t really think I can continue to play.”
Sharpe has dedicated his 1995 season to his brother, Sterling, a former star receiver for the Green Bay Packers. Before last season’s playoffs, doctors said Sterling Sharpe could severely injure his neck if he kept playing so he is sitting out the season, though he might return next year.
