WORLD IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Rebel Attack Follows News of Peace Plan

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Sri Lankan guerrillas stormed three coastal army bases in the northeast, state radio said, adding that 69 rebels were killed by air force attacks. The bombings followed a news leak of a peace plan by President Chandrika Kumaratunga that would establish regional councils in all eight of Sri Lanka’s provinces and give them wide powers to govern themselves. The radio report said the air force responded to the attack by bombing 10 assault crafts of the Sea Tigers, the sea wing of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, who are fighting for a Tamil homeland.
