GOLF ROUNDUP : Ogle, Lowery Are Leading a Tight Field

Brett Ogle birdied the 18th hole Saturday to tie Steve Lowery for the lead heading into the final round of the wide-open Western Open at Elmont, Ill.

Ogle shot a three-under-par 69 and Lowery a 70 to move past second-round leader Jay Haas with a three-day total of seven-under 209. Haas led until the 16th hole but bogeyed the last two to fall one shot back. Bob Estes and Grant Waite were another stroke off the pace.

Tom Watson, looking for his first PGA Tour victory since 1987, headed a group of five golfers three behind the leaders. Watson had a one-over 73 Saturday, despite making the shot of the day--a 45-foot sand shot for an eagle on the par-five 15th hole.

Eighteen golfers were within four strokes of the lead and 24 were within five.

U.S. Amateur champion Tiger Woods shot a 77--including 40 on the back nine--and is at 222.

Graham Marsh shot a tournament-record eight-under-par 63 in the Kroger Senior Classic at Mason, Ohio, and Isao Aoki had a second consecutive 66.

But neither could overtake first-round leader Mike Hill, who takes a two-stroke advantage into today’s final round. Hill shot a 66 to tie the tournament record with a 12-under 130 total. Aoki is two back and Marsh is another stroke behind.

Dick Goetz trailed Hill by eight strokes, but produced a highlight with a hole in one on the 157-yard fifth hole, using an eight-iron.

Pam Wright had birdies on four of the last six holes to move into a one-shot lead over three players after two rounds of the LPGA Jamie Farr Toledo Classic at Sylvania, Ohio.

Wright, a native of Scotland, finished with a five-under-par 66 and completed two rounds at five-under 137.

She held a one-shot lead over first-round co-leader Colleen Walker, Muffin Spencer-Devlin and Kathryn Marshall.

Colin Montgomerie of Scotland took the lead in the Irish Open, and Greg Norman vaulted into contention by matching the course record with a seven-under-par 65 in the third round at Kilkenny.

Montgomerie birdied the last two holes for a round of 69 and a 205 total.

Norman was one stroke behind, tied with England’s David Gilford and Sam Torrance of Scotland.
