Baldwin Signs Three Players for CSUN

Cal State Northridge Coach Dave Baldwin announced the signing of three players, including two from Valley College.

Rudy De La Torre, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive lineman, and strong safety Manu Langi (5-11, 185) played at Valley.

The Matadors added another freshman defensive back when Tayari Ferrell of Inglewood High committed.

Baldwin is also close to finalizing his coaching staff. Bob Bostad, an offensive line coach from the University of Minnesota, has been hired as a part-time coach pending administrative approval.

Former Cal State Northridge linebacker Ivy Calvin was released by the San Jose Sabercats in the Arena Football League and Barry Voorhees, an offensive lineman from Northridge, was put on injured reserve by the Arizona Rattlers.

Track and Field

Erika Bowling, a recent graduate of Etiwanda High, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Bowling won the 200 and 400 meters in the Mt. Baldy League championships and placed eighth in the 400 in the Southern Section Division I finals. She has bests of 25.60 seconds in the 200 and 57.10 in the 400.

Tennis

Darian Chappell of Camarillo, Maureen Diaz of Glendale, Nicholas Weiss of Woodland Hills and Michael Marquez of Ventura have received endorsements by the Southern California Tennis Assn. to play in the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s national junior championships in August.

SCTA endorsements are the equivalent of automatic berths.

Chappell, who has climbed from No. 37 to No. 7 in the Southern California seedings in six months, will compete in the girls’ 16-and-under division.

Diaz, who lost in the championship match of the recent Southern California sectional championships, qualified in the girls’ 14-and-under division.

Weiss, a sectional semifinalist, and Marquez received berths in boys’ 14s.

Erin Carroll of Ventura (in boys’ 16s) and Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo (boys’ 14s) are alternates who could receive at-large berths.

Baseball

David Mendoza, an assistant coach at Mission College since 1989, has resigned to pursue a graduate degree.

Mendoza said he was offered but declined the head-coaching job.

Basketball

Cal State Northridge is holding a basketball camp for boys ages 8 through 17 beginning July 10.

The San Fernando Volleyball Unit will conduct a training program for anyone interested in becoming a certified high school volleyball official.

The inaugural Lu Ball Softball Camp, for girls 9 through 14, will be held at Cal Lutheran University from July 31 through Aug. 4.
