Shots were reported fired at Oxnard Airport on Saturday night after a plane suspected of carrying drugs and tailed by a Drug Enforcement Agency helicopter landed there.
Oxnard police said they did not know who fired the shots.
At least one suspect fled on foot, authorities said. He was apprehended in a nearby neighborhood and brought to the Oxnard police station. Police did not immediately release his identity.
Police from Oxnard and Ventura, assisted by a Sheriff’s Department helicopter and search dogs, continued combing the area for other suspects.
Oxnard police said they first received a call from customs officials at 9:30 p.m. that a plane involved in a drug drop elsewhere was about to land at the airport. They then received a second call stating that shots had been fired.
It was unclear where the plane and helicopter came from, authorities said.
After the aircraft landed, police closed off all entrances to the airport.
