Newport Beach’s scenic Upper Newport Bay is not only one of the nation’s best examples of a natural estuary, it has also produced some of the most unusual mixes of land and sea fossils.
Fossils of native horses, bison, wild dogs and birds have been found in the same areas as whales, sharks, dolphins and shellfish.
Archeologists have also unearthed mastodons and primitive sea lions in the area.
