San Fernando Valley : BE KIND TO ANIMALS

The possible jail term is the same for choking a woman and strangling a rabbit.
The possible fine is different.
A thousand dollars for attacking the woman. Twenty thousand for killing the pet rabbit.
“This is consistent with a [country] that has six times as many animal shelters as domestic violence shelters,” said Assemblywoman Sheila J. Kuehl (D-Santa Monica). “Crimes against women have never been taken as seriously as other types of crime.”
The issue came up after a North Hollywood man was accused of striking and choking his girlfriend and later strangling her pet rabbit as she watched. He faces one year in jail for each incident, city prosecutors said Tuesday.
Raphael Diaz Rodriguez, 24, pleaded not guilty Monday to misdemeanor charges of battery in a dating relationship and cruelty to animals.
