Dunn Gets Flattened by Ruling : Track and field: CSUN javelin thrower settles for 10th place after her longest throw is invalidated.

Kristin Dunn of Cal State Northridge concluded her college career with a controversial 10th-place finish in the women’s javelin in the USA Track & Field championships Friday in Sacramento.
Dunn’s best official throw of 160 feet 2 inches came in the second round, but Northridge assistant Candy Roberts said that a third-round toss of “at least 180 feet” was incorrectly ruled flat.
A throw is considered flat--and therefore invalid--if the tip of the javelin fails to crest parallel.
“Everyone I talked to who saw the throw agreed that it was not a flat throw,” Roberts said. “But the officials were calling things extremely tight. Usually, they give the benefit of the doubt to the throwers, but not today.”
A 180-foot throw would have broken Dunn’s school-record 176-4 and given her another three throws.
The top eight of the 12 finalists after the first three rounds were awarded three more attempts.
