Mark Kotsay, who led Cal State Fullerton to its third national title, on Monday was named winner of the R.E. Smith Award as the collegiate baseball player of the year.
Kotsay, a sophomore center fielder and relief pitcher, earlier had been chosen the most valuable player of the College World Series, Collegiate Baseball’s co-national player of the year with Tennessee’s Todd Helton, and the Big West Conference player of the year.
He was also selected to try out for the national team, starting today in Millington, Tenn.
Fullerton’s coach, Augie Garrido, was selected coach of the year by the National Baseball Coaches’ Assn.
He also received that honor in 1975, 1979 and 1984.
