Fast Kick Sends Arce to Victory : Track and field: Palmdale High senior overtakes Harper in 3,200 at Golden West Invitational.
Antonio Arce of Palmdale High outkicked Billy Harper of Junction City, Ore., to win the boys’ 3,200 meters in the Golden West Invitational at American River College in Sacramento on Saturday.
Arce trailed Harper by 15 meters with 300 meters left, but caught him entering the stretch and pulled away in the final 50 meters. “Antonio just shifted into another gear and Harper couldn’t go with him,†said Rob Fairley, Arce’s coach.
Arce timed a region-leading 9 minutes 4.13 seconds and Harper finished in 9:04.42. Camarillo’s Eleazar Hernandez was again slowed by a side cramp and placed eighth in an unofficial 9:36.
In another meet, Josefina Sanchez of Ventura College won the women’s 3,000 in the inaugural National Community College championships at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.
Her 11:08.57 clocking was 30 seconds slower than her sixth-place time in last month’s State championships, but gave her a 31-second margin of victory in the meet that was plagued by small fields.
Ventura’s Kris McLucas placed second in the 110 high hurdles (14.90) and third in the 400 intermediates (58.13) in the men’s meet.
