Nursing Begrudged
* Thank you for your commentary (May 17) on the recently rejected California bill to protect a mother’s right to breast-feed in public.
My own personal experience of nursing my child while huddled--completely concealed--in my car, in dressing rooms, in public restrooms and even in my own home makes me wish this natural, healthy and beautiful nurturing could be accomplished without shame or discomfort.
When I breast-feed my child, it is not a deviant act, and there is nothing sexual about it.
I would add that by setting a deadline when nursing should end, we unknowingly contribute to the notion that breast-feeding is an unacceptable behavior to be terminated as soon as possible.
