County Beaches

* Re “Request for Beach Funds Makes Waves,” May 24:
The $6.79 million being requested by the state Parks and Recreation Department is absurd. L.A. County was willing to operate these same beaches with the state paying $1.5 million per year in the cost-sharing program. The county already has the equipment, and is recognized as one of the most professional lifeguard services in the world.
There is also a public safety problem with the state running these beaches: No 24-hour emergency service, no underwater recovery unit for plane crashes and submersions, no defibrillator service for medical emergencies. We have also lost the continuity of service along the coastline.
