Via Lombardia Goes for Repeat Showing
Via Lombardia, who made a successful American debut with a victory in the Will Rogers Breeders’ Cup Handicap three weeks ago, will try for a repeat against nine other 3-year-olds in the $100,000 Cinema Handicap today at Hollywood Park.
An Irish-bred son of Shardari trained by Neil Drysdale, Via Lombardia, the 9-5 choice on the morning line, will attempt to cap a memorable week for owner Henry Pabst. On Monday, Pabst’s Earl Of Barking won the $500,000 Hollywood Turf Handicap as a 24-1 shot.
Via Lombardia rallied from last to win the Will Rogers by three-quarters of a length under Delahoussaye.
Four others from the Will Rogers--Bee El Tee, who finished third; Hidden Source, fourth; Oncefortheroad, fifth, and Alletasso, eighth--are also in the Cinema, which is run at 1 1/8 miles on the turf.
Among the newcomers are Fine N’Majestic and In Character. Fine N’Majestic will be making his first start since winning the California Derby on April 15. With Delahoussaye remaining on Via Lombardia, Gary Stevens will ride Fine N’Majestic for trainer Bill Shoemaker.
