Cal State Fullerton outfielder Mark Kotsay and pitcher Ted Silva were named to the Baseball America magazine All-America first team Thursday.

Kotsay, whose .413 batting average is the highest on the team, was the only sophomore chosen. He was picked as the designated hitter. Silva’s 16-1 record is the best of the four pitchers chosen.

Fullerton catcher Brian Loyd, also a sophomore, was named to the third team. Infielder Jeff Liefer of Long Beach State was a second-team choice.

Todd Helton was chosen by the magazine as college player of the year, an honor he shared with Kotsay in selections by Collegiate Baseball.

Kotsay, Helton and Texas Tech third baseman Clint Bryant were finalists for the 1995 Smith Award, which is presented by the Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn.
