* I agree with Robert Scheer (Column Left, May 23) that American kids need good educations, but does he really believe the Department of Education is giving them one? Throwing good money after bad just doesn’t cut it! Local decisions, control and parental involvement will get the job done better, faster and at much less cost.
Basics, teacher safety, plus allowing for discipline, thus giving teachers more time to teach, cutting out bilingual education, homework completed, parents who care enough to work with their kids and teachers, and holding students back in the lower grades if they are not ready to move on will help a lot more than the Department of Education. Give the local schools a chance!
