BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : After Four Homers, Baldwin on His Way

After giving up four of the record 12 home runs hit in Sunday’s 14-12 victory over the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox pitcher James Baldwin was optioned to triple-A Nashville.

Baldwin, who lasted 1 1/3 innings against the Tigers, yielded seven runs and seven hits and is 0-1 with a 12.89 earned-run average. The White Sox called up pitcher Brian Keyser from Nashville.

The New York Yankees called up shortstop Derek Jeter, their first-round pick in the June 1992 free-agent draft, from triple-A Columbus. Kevin Elster was designated for assignment.

Mark McGwire missed his second consecutive game for the Athletics because of stiffness in his back, but Oakland said the injury did not appear to be serious. . . . Milwaukee Brewer infielder Kevin Seitzer suffered a mild concussion when he was struck in the helmet by a fastball from Minnesota pitcher Scott Erickson. It’s not immediately known how long he’ll be sidelined.
