HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PLAYOFFS : Venice Goes Under on Fishman’s One-Hitter
El Camino Real High sophomore Shaun Fishman pitched a one-hitter as the Conquistadores beat Venice, 3-0, in the first round of the City Section 4-A Division playoffs Tuesday at El Camino Real.
Fishman (7-3) retired the first 12 batters before John Smith’s fifth-inning single. Fishman had six strikeouts and no walks.
Marvin Jones and Steve Nelson had run-scoring singles for the Conquistadores (18-8-1).
Kennedy 9, Reseda 3--Jon Garland hit a three-run home run during a six-run second inning for the Golden Cougars.
Christian Bartlett had two hits and drove in two runs for Kennedy (23-4), while Robert Montesdeoca (4-0) scattered eight hits, striking out six and walking three.
Carson 6, Grant 3--All the Colts’ runs were unearned in a game at Carson.
Greg Levine had two hits and two RBIs for Grant (7-18).
Scott McClaskey struck out six and gave up five hits for Carson (21-10).
Poly 9, Westchester 4--Paco Hernandez had three hits and drove in three runs for the Parrots at Poly.
Steve Guerrero added two hits and four runs batted in for Poly (20-6), which broke the game open with a five-run sixth-inning.
Chatsworth 4, San Pedro 1--The Chancellors capitalized on a two-out, fifth-inning error to score three runs at Chatsworth.
Ray Darybigi hit a shallow fly ball to center field, but the ball was dropped, allowing the game-winning run to score.
Joe Tillman collected an RBI single in the fourth, tying the game, 1-1. Tillman added a double for the Chancellors (17-9).
Sylmar 3, Birmingham 0--Rafael Velazco pitched a two-hitter for the Spartans, striking out 10 and walking three.
Rene Zavala had two hits for Sylmar (19-7), scoring once and driving in a run.
SOUTHERN SECTION DIVISION II
Glendora 2, Ventura 1--Monty Moritz had a home run in the sixth inning but it wasn’t enough for the Cougars (16-10) at Glendora.
Aaron Rowand tied a Southern Section record with his 16th home run in the first inning for the Tartans (21-6).
DIVISION III
Santa Margarita 15, Quartz Hill 3--The Eagles (20-7) scored 10 runs in the second inning of a second-round game at Quartz Hill.
J.D. Smith had a double and home run, driving in two runs, and Darrell Hussman added two hits, including a double, for the Rebels (17-6).
DIVISION IV
Calabasas 6, South Pasadena 0--Brandon Cohen (10-0) pitched a three-hitter, struck out six and recorded his fourth shutout, and Jared Sandler had three hits and drove in a run for the top-seeded Coyotes (25-0) in a first-round game at Calabasas.
Billy Hoover, Mike Melucci and Josh Goldfield each had two hits and an RBI, and Brett Niles doubled and knocked in two runs for the Coyotes.
Santa Paula 2, Cabrillo 1--Rocky Frutos had two hits and picked up the victory in a first-round game at Cabrillo.
It was Santa Paula’s first playoff victory since 1940.
Marcus Harris struck out five for Cabrillo (11-13).
DIVISION V
Village Christian 8, St. Bonaventure 2--David Gustafson had three hits and drove in two runs, Jason Mikels had two hits and scored two runs, and Robbie Mikels added a two-run triple for the Crusaders (19-4) in a second-round game at St. Bonaventure.
David Swanson (7-1) allowed three hits over 4 1/3 innings for the Crusaders.
David Harrison had two hits for the Seraphs (15-9).
St. Monica 6, Faith Baptist 4--Andrew Schwartz hit a game-winning two-run homer in the top of the seventh for the Mariners in a second-round game at Faith Baptist.
Faith Baptist’s Robert Escalante had a two-run double to tie the score, 4-4, in the bottom of the sixth. Rani Zahr had a solo home run for the Contenders in the third.
Bishop Diego 6, L.A. Baptist 5--Steve Ramirez scored on Brian Elmerick’s grounder in the eighth inning to give the Cardinals (17-8) a second-round victory at L.A. Baptist.
DIVISION VI
Liberty Christian 1, Buckley 0--T.J. Jackson struck out seven and walked three in 10 innings for the Griffins, but received no decision as his team stranded 15 baserunners in the 11-inning setback at Buckley.
