Garden Grove : Schools Get Grant for Gifted Students

The Garden Grove Unified School District has won a $20,000 grant aimed at boosting the number of underrepresented students in Gifted and Talented Education classes, a district spokesman said.

The funds, provided by Medtronic Inc., a medical equipment manufacturer in Anaheim, will go to the district’s Open GATE program. Begun in 1993, Open GATE provides after-school science and technology classes to potentially gifted Latino students in grades three through eight who speak limited English. It also offers field trips, computer hardware and software and Internet access, said district spokesman Alan Trudell.

Students are teamed with an equal number of students from GATE classes to perform hands-on laboratory experiments, Trudell said.
