Regional and municipal elections across Spain Sunday may deal Felipe Gonzalez’s ruling Socialist Party its biggest blow since Gonzalez came to power in 1982, the latest polls indicate.
Corruption scandals involving Socialist leaders have intensified voter disenchantment. The conservative Popular Party led by Jose Maria Aznar is expected to win Sunday’s regional elections outright except in an impoverished rural region on the Portuguese border. The conservatives are also expected to carry most major cities, although a tight race is anticipated in Barcelona.
