Second-seeded UCLA (46-6) will play seventh-seeded Iowa (39-24-1), and fifth-seeded Cal State Fullerton (45-15) will take on fourth-seeded Nevada Las Vegas (47-12) Thursday in opening games of the College World Series of women’s softball at Oklahoma City.
Fullerton will play at 12:30 p.m. (PDT), UCLA at 6:30.
The other first-round pairings in the double-elimination tournament match top-seeded Arizona (63-5) against Princeton (49-11) and third-seeded Southwest Louisiana (48-7) against Michigan (50-10).
Fullerton Coach Judi Garman was disappointed that the Titans weren’t among the top four seeded teams. “The seedings were wrong from the beginning,” she said.
The Titans are ranked third in the national coaches’ poll, but were seeded behind Cal State Northridge in the Northridge regional. Fullerton went unbeaten in the regional, defeating Northridge, 2-1, in the championship game.
UNLV won the Big West Conference championship with a 27-5 record, and Fullerton was 20-8 in conference play. The teams split two regular-season doubleheaders.
