The New Zealand government signed a deal with one of the country’s largest Maori tribes to settle grievances dating back more than 130 years. Prime Minister Jim Bolger and Maori Queen Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu signed the deal before thousands of Tainui Maori on the North Island. The settlement included an apology by the government for deaths and destruction during the Maori Wars of the 1860s, which led to the confiscation of Maori land.
