World IN BRIEF : PAKISTAN : 23 Die as Karachi Strike Turns Violent

Deadly gun battles raged in the streets of Karachi and dozens of cars were set on fire as a militant opposition group shut down Pakistan’s largest city with a strike protesting alleged police abuse. At least 23 people were shot and killed, including five members of the security forces, and more than 40 people were injured, police said. The Mohajir National Movement called the strike after two of its workers died in police custody a week ago.
