* Of all the nerve! Arianna Huffington (“Charity Doesn’t Begin at the Public Till,” Commentary, May 15) has the nerve to ask us what we give to charity after her husband squandered $28 million on his wacky bid for the Senate. No, Mrs. Huffington, we don’t give a damn what Babs, or Sam Donaldson or Lee Iacocca give to charity. We really don’t give a damn what you give to charity. All we have to do is watch you and we know. Oh yes, we know.

* Is there no end to Arianna Huffington’s gall? She goes after Vice President Al Gore and his wife for taking the standard deduction rather than itemizing deductions on their federal income tax. From this she deduces a meager contribution to charity. Does she think we have forgotten that when her husband ran for the U.S. Senate last year, from announcement day to his long-delayed concession he rejected any and all requests to provide information on his income-tax returns? And this in an era when it is routine for candidates to do so.
What an obnoxious pair.

* Arianna Huffington says, “From whom much is given, from him that much more will be expected.” Isn’t this a sound argument for the progressive income tax?

* Given the repeated refusal of Arianna Huffington’s husband to release his tax returns, while attacking Sen. Feinstein for not opening up her returns, I do not expect to see any financial figures for the Huffingtons. That, of course, is just fine. However, if they won’t put up, I sure wish that they would shut up.
