LONG AND WINDING VIDEO: And what will we see in “The Beatles Anthology,” the sprawling, five-hour video documentary of the group’s career that ABC-TV will air over two nights in November?
Produced by the Beatles’ company, Apple, the documentary had its beginnings as a film project intended for release as “The Long and Winding Road” way back in 1969. Most of the footage in “Anthology” is said to be familiar to hard-core fans, although in pristine condition--with new material coming from the band members’ home movie archives (including an in-studio performance of “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da”).
Surprisingly, there are reportedly no complete song performances in the five-hour version--because, one source said, producers feared losing the interest of a general audience. The same is said to be true for the subsequent 10-hour home video version, giving rise to speculation about future Beatles performance video releases.
The video reportedly ends with the three ex-Beatles arguing--good-naturedly--over their very different memories of their history.
