Japan Warned to Deregulate Air Travel Market: Gerald Greenwald, chairman and chief executive of United Airlines parent UAL Corp., warned that unless Japan deregulates its air travel market, foreign airlines will increasingly shift their routes to neighboring Asian countries. Although Japan is now the most important international market for United, the company is finding other Asian destinations such as Hong Kong more accommodating to its needs, Greenwald said. He said the number of departures from London’s Heathrow Airport far outnumber those from Tokyo’s Narita Airport, mostly because restraints placed on foreign airlines by the Japanese government to protect Japanese carriers.
