The Chapman softball team will begin the NCAA Division III playoffs against Simpson (Iowa) Friday in Storm Lake, Iowa.
The Panthers, 37-5 and ranked second in the nation, are the top-seeded team in the four-team West Regional. Host Buena Vista (Iowa) and Cal Lutheran are the other teams. Buena Vista is ranked ninth, Simpson 18th and Cal Lutheran 24th.
Chapman beat Simpson, 2-1, in March at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla., but the Panthers had to score two runs (both unearned) in the final inning to win.
“Simpson is the one that scares me the most and we have to play them first,” Chapman co-Coach Janet Lloyd said.
The tournament is double elimination and continues Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday. The winner advances to the national tournament May 18-21 at Storm Lake.
