Nate and Rhoda Snyder’s small, bargain patio furniture store in Agoura has metamorphosed into a 7,000-square-foot showroom that is one of the best mattress stores in the San Fernando Valley.

R & N Mattress, now in Canoga Park, is run by a good team. Nate is knowledgeable about bedding, and Rhoda has expertise in merchandising. The main manufacturers represented on the showroom floor are Simmons and Serta, although the Snyders can get just about any mattress that’s made.

The store’s least expensive merchandise is made up of a couple of off-brands from local manufacturers. The firm mattresses sell for $80 in the twin size and $110 in the full size.

But most shoppers are looking for the big names, and Simmons and Serta are two of the biggest. In the lower price range for Serta is the Crest, which retails for $399.95 for a queen-size set. R & N lops $100 off that price. In Serta’s Perfect Sleeper line is the Parkdale, which comes in firm, medium firm and pillow top. Most stores sell it for $699 to $799, but it’s $650 here.

R & N carries a complete inventory of Simmons Beautyrest, Maxipedic and the new BackCare line. The Beautyrest queen size sets start at $449.95 for a model that sells for $499.95 to $599.95 at some stores.

The popular Simmons Maxipedic, a very firm mattress, is $109.95 for the full size, compared to $139 to $149 elsewhere. The queen-size set was $299.95, compared to an average retail of $100 more.

New from Simmons is the BackCare Innerspring line that features a two-inch layer of “anatomic†foam (which conforms to the body) on top of the coils. The Elite model in this line is $599.95 for the set; expect to pay between $750 and $850 elsewhere.

If you’ve had problems comparing prices on mattresses, you are not alone. Mattress comparison shopping is a sticky wicket, because the names for the various models often vary from store to store.

On the floor at R & N are many ’94 models that reflect even deeper discounts. With heavy advertising campaigns for the new lines, Snyder wants to have a big inventory on hand. Last year’s floor models must be cleared out, so the prices just keep going down. A full-size Beautyrest classic that was discounted to $499.95 is now $335.95, and a full-size Beautyrest Monroe that originally sold for $559.95 is reduced to $370.

Buying a mattress is an important investment, since we spend one-third of our lives on one. A good mattress should last about 10 years, so be sure to check out the mattress and the warranty--and this pleasant couple’s showroom.
