USC’s Spring Ends With Scrimmage
USC’s Shawn Walters was the leading rusher and quarterbacks Brad Otton and Kyle Wachholtz each threw a touchdown pass in Saturday’s scrimmage at Howard Jones Field on the last day of spring practice before about 5,000.
In the casual atmosphere of spring football, Coach John Robinson served as master of ceremonies, doing on-field interviews with players and coaching as well.
Walters, a junior who was the Trojans’ leading rusher last season, had a 46-yard run early in the scrimmage. Wachholtz, a senior, was seven for 15 for 37 yards, and his junior rival, Otton, was four for seven for 52 yards. Junior backup Matt Koffler was 10 for 19 for 107 yards.
The surprise performer was walk-on Benji DeBord, who led all receivers with four catches for 42 yards, including a touchdown pass from Wachholtz.
Earlier, Otton threw a touchdown pass to Keyshawn Johnson, who later injured his right hand and sat out the rest of the scrimmage.
