BASEBALL / WEST ANAHEIM LIONS TOURNAMENT : Kennedy Has to Hold On for 5-4 Victory Over Warren
Charlie Marino hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Kennedy held on to defeat Downey Warren, 5-4, in a first-round game at the West Anaheim Lions Tournament Saturday at Brookhurst Park.
Kennedy (9-6) broke a 4-4 tie with a run in the fifth inning.
Warren loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Kennedy’s Brad Sabol induced a ground ball to short to end the game.
Ben Molnar picked up the victory in relief, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing two hits.
In other games:
Anaheim 9, Fullerton 8--Jose Rodriguez had three hits and two RBIs and Carlos Ramirez added two hits and two RBIs for host Anaheim (3-12). Anaheim will play Kennedy in the second round Monday at 7 p.m. at Brookhurst Park.
Cypress 9, La Habra 3--Jake Bratcher had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs for host Cypress (7-7). Brian Dinley (2-0) allowed three hits in six innings to earn the victory.
Dana Hills 13, Cerritos 7--Chris Toomey went two for three with four RBIs and Jason Nathanson was two for five with two RBIs for Dana Hills (7-8).
Loara 10, Sonora 9 (6, time)--Sonora scored three runs in the sixth inning and had the go-ahead run on second base with two outs, but Loara’s Clint Magnuson struck out Bubba Bondurant.
Sunny Hills 10, Western 3--Jeff Templeton was three for four with a double and an RBI for ninth-ranked Sunny Hills (11-4).
