SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Freshman Christy Robitaille had a perfect game broken up in the top of the fifth inning but held on and finished with a one-hitter as seventh-ranked Woodbridge defeated Irvine, 3-0, Thursday in a Sea View League softball game at Alton Park.

Robitaille (10-2), who pitched a no-hitter against Santa Margarita Tuesday, had two outs in the fifth when Lindsey Matthews reached on an error by first baseman Ashley Boone. Matthews hit a grounder to shortstop Carrie Brown, whose throw beat Matthews, but Boone pulled her foot.

The next batter, Marianne Calvin, stopped Robitaille’s bid for her third no-hitter with a single between second and third.

“Robitaille was great,†Woodbridge Coach Alan Dugard said. “She was very much in command. The umpire told me she was deadly on the corner.â€

Robitaille’s performance--one hit, five strikeouts and no walks--was backed up by a strong defense and an adequate offense.

The Warriors (10-5, 2-0) scored in the first inning. Nichole Thompson singled to left and Lolita Harper sacrificed her to second. Boone, who went two for two, reached on a infield single to third, and when third baseman Shye Nakabayashi overthrew first base, Thompson scored.

Woodbridge, ranked fourth in Division II, scored another run in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, designated hitter Lisa Weaver hit a single to left-center field to score Corey Washington, who was two for two.

Harper tried to score from second but was thrown out at the plate by Vaquero center fielder Katy Morrison. Boone was called out at third on the play after Harper got tangled with catcher Missy Brigman, resulting in an interference call by the umpire.

The Warriors got their final run in the sixth inning when Lizzy Lemire drove in Boone with a single.
