BFI Wants to Take Over Trash Hauling
An international waste-disposal company will make its case later this month to take over trash hauling in Moorpark.
Browning Ferris Industries, the nation’s second-largest trash hauler, wants to bid on hauling contracts in Moorpark that are now controlled by G.I. Rubbish and Anderson Disposal Co.
Those contracts expire in July, but were set for automatic renewal pending closed-door negotiations with the companies.
BFI is requesting that the city open the bidding process.
With just over 7,000 trash customers, Moorpark might seem like an odd place for the $4-billion Texas-based company to set its sights on, but company officials see the contract as their first foothold in the county.
City Council members said at a meeting Wednesday that they were intrigued by BFI’s request.
Although Moorpark’s $17.40 monthly trash rate is lower than the county average by more than $2, BFI officials said the fee is still inflated compared to other Southern California communities. The fee should be about $13.50, BFI officials said.
The City Council is scheduled to listen to BFI’s sales pitch at its meeting April 26.
