RAILROADS
Amtrak Makes More Cuts: The troubled U.S passenger train system announced a series of service cutbacks--including one route into California--to take effect in June and September. Without the cutbacks, which will total 24% of Amtrak’s routes when complete, the railroad might have been facing bankruptcy by midsummer, President Thomas M. Downs said. If the savings from reducing service and staff go as planned, Amtrak will have a balanced budget this year and next, he said. Starting June 11, service on the California Zephyr between Salt Lake City and Oakland will be eliminated on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
