American Pacific Marine of Oxnard has been awarded an $8.5-million contract from Chevron USA to decommission and remove four oil platforms off the Santa Barbara coast.
The project, approved by the California Coastal Commission, will begin in July and take four months, and will be the largest offshore oil removal project ever off the California coast, said an official at American Pacific.
Company president Tom Thompson said the firm’s 150 divers, technicians and engineers will use sophisticated ships and cables to remove the platforms 15 feet below the seabed. American Pacific is a subsidiary of American Oilfield Divers Inc. of Lafayette, La.
