THE PREPS : TRACK AND FIELD ROUNDUP : Parks’ Jumps Help El Toro Defeat Santa Margarita
Elliott Parks again was a top performer for El Toro and helped the Chargers beat Sea View League-rival Santa Margarita, 81-55, Thursday at Saddleback College.
Parks, a sophomore, was first in the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), the long jump (20-8) and the triple jump (42-3). Junior Ed Pollack swept in the 800 (2:03) and the 1,600 (4:34.9) for El Toro (4-1, 2-1).
Matt Blasdel won the 400 (52.0) and 300 hurdles (40.9) for Santa Margarita and teammate Tim Fitzgerald took first in the 100 (11.1) and 200 (22.4).
In other Sea View League meets:
Corona del Mar 68, Newport Harbor 68--Kumasean Lee posted victories in the 100 (11.6) and 200 (24.6) and Shahram DeZahd won the 800 in 2:04.2 and the 1,600 meters in 4:34.2 for Newport Harbor (0-3-1, 0-1-1).
Woodbridge 69, Irvine 67--Mickis Brown won the long jump (20-5) and triple jump (42-8), Ross Venook won the 1,600 (4:33.5) and 3,200 (9:58.9) and Dean Jacobson won the shot put (49-3) and discus (129-4) for host Woodbridge (5-1, 2-0).
In the Empire League:
Cypress 86, Kennedy 41--Kevin Gingrass placed first in the long jump and triple jump to lead Cypress (2-1, 1-1). Gingrass moved up to fourth in the county with a 42-7 triple jump.
Katella 95, Loara 41--Juan Venegas won the 1,600 (4:43.5) and 3,200 (10:28.0), and Brandon Vessels took the 200 in 23.1 and anchored the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams for Katella (5-1, 2-0).
In the Garden Grove League:
Garden Grove 89, Los Amigos 38--Mike Balderas won the 800 and 1,600 and the high jump (6-0) for for Garden Grove (2-1, 2-1). Kevin Griswold won the 100 (10.8) and 200 (22.2) for the Argonauts.
Santiago 93, La Quinta 33--Ben Mejia won the 1,600 (4:58) and 3,200 (10:58) for host Santiago (4-1, 3-0).
In the Golden West League:
Tustin 73, Santa Ana 54--Dominique Degrammont won the 110 hurdles (15.7) and 300 hurdles (43.8) and Reggie Curry won the long jump (20-10) and triple jump (45-6) for visiting Tustin (2-0 in league).
In the South Coast League:
Mission Viejo 82, Capistrano Valley 54--Andy Morgan won the 800 and the 1,600 for Mission Viejo (2-0), and Mike Hayden won the 300 hurdles and the high jump for Capistrano Valley (1-1).
San Clemente 94, Mater Dei 51--Cheyenne Dixon won the long jump (20- 3/4) and triple jump (40-8 3/4) and Brett Samperi the shot put (41-7) and discus (112-7) for San Clemente (2-2, 1-1).
In the Sunset League:
Edison 76, Los Alamitos 60--Matt Allen won the 110 hurdles (16.1) and 300 hurdles (42.5) and Jason Bader the shot put (49-4) and discus (169-10) for Edison (7-1, 1-1).
Esperanza 78, Huntington Beach 58--Pat Swanson won the 110 hurdles (15.0) and 300 hurdles (40.6), Kareem Clark won the 200 (22.4) and long jump (20-10 1/2) and Steve Sherwood won the high jump (6-6 1/2) and triple jump (41-1 3/4) for host Esperanza (6-0, 2-0).
Marina 74, Fountain Valley 62--Frank Cracchiolo won the shot put (48-7) and discus (161-3) and Jacob Childs won the 1,600 (4:47.1) and the 3,200 (10:36.3).
In Century League girls’ meets:
Villa Park 94, Orange 28--Kris McKeon won the 110 low hurdles for Villa Park in 18.4 seconds, then switched to field events and won the long and triple jumps.
Foothill 85, El Modena 49--Tara Oettinger won the 100 (12.6), 200 (26.1), 400 (1:00.3), and long jump (16-7 1/2) for Foothill (1-0 in league).
In the Empire League:
Cypress 79, Kennedy 46--Freshman Lisa McCreary won the 400, 300 hurdles and anchored the 400 relay team for Cypress (2-1, 1-1). Kennedy is 0-3, 0-2.
Katella 68, Loara 57--Jamie Vaicaro won the 800 meters in 2:35.6, the 1,600 meters in 5:33.5 and ran the second leg for Katella’s winning 1,600 relay team. Kristen Sakamoto was first in the 100-meter hurdles (18.0) and 300 hurdles (54.2) for the Knights (4-2, 2-0).
In the Garden Grove League:
Garden Grove 74, Los Amigos 53--Jenie Barler won the 100 and 200 and Erin Nelson the 800 and 1,600 for Garden Grove (3-0, 3-0).
Santiago 97, La Quinta 38--Karla Rojas won the 880 (2:51.7), 1,600 (6:04.6) and 3,200 (13:46) and Elaine Tran won the 100 hurdles (19.8) and 330 hurdles (1:00.0) for host Santiago (3-2, 2-1).
In the Golden West League:
Tustin 81, Santa Ana 44--Eliu Rodriguez won the 300 hurdles (57.0) and Ilda Oropeza won the shot put (26-8) for host Santa Ana (0-2, 0-2).
In the Orange League:
Anaheim 84, Magnolia 43--Patty Chau four events, including the 100 hurdles (17.5), high jump (5-0), long jump (14-11) and triple jump (31-4) and Karla Battle won the 100 (11.8) and 220 (28.1) for host Anaheim (2-0, 2-0).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Laguna Hills 93, Estancia 34--Tayyiba Haneef won the high jump (5-1) and the shot put (31-11) for Laguna Hills.
In the Sea View League:
Newport Harbor 76, Corona del Mar 51--Mandy Clayton won the 300 hurdles in 53.8, the long jump (16- 3/4) and the triple jump (36-4 1/4) for Newport Harbor (3-1, 2-0). Tracy Clark took first in the 1,600 meters (5:18.5) and 3,200 (12:26.7) for Corona del Mar.
Santa Margarita 77, El Toro 50--Barbara Scheil won the 100 and 200, and teammate Katie Nuanes won the 800 and 1,600 for Santa Margarita (1-1).
In the South Coast League:
Mission Viejo 83, Capistrano Valley 44--Freshman Ashley Bethel won the 100 hurdles in 15.4 seconds, then took two field events: the high jump (5-1) and the long jump (17-8 3/4) for Mission Viejo (2-0).
San Clemente 68, Mater Dei 59--Kelly Krueger won the 100 hurdles in 17.6 and the triple jump (32-5 1/2) for San Clemente (2-2, 1-1).
Trabuco Hills 85, Dana Hilla 50--Junior Peggy Hall won the 800 and the 1,600, and freshman Darnesha Griffith won the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump for Trabuco Hills (2-0).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 83, Huntington Beach 54--Kristy Kierulff won the high jump (5-4) and long jump (17-2 3/4) and Kelly O’Conner won the triple jump (36-7 1/2) and pole vault (7-6) for Esperanza (5-1, 1-1).
