PLAYA DEL REY : Part of Road Collapses; Repairs Under Way

A construction company contracted by the city of Los Angeles is working around the clock to fix a six-foot-deep sinkhole on a Playa del Rey street that was caused by a sewer-line break. A section of Lincoln Boulevard near 83rd Street gave way about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when a city sanitation truck rumbled over it.
The driver of the truck was injured slightly.
Caltrans officials closed both northbound lanes and diverted traffic into the median lane. The flow of raw sewage was contained at the site of the 8-by-10-foot sinkhole.
“When you have a city with over 3,000 miles of sewer lines, it’s hard to keep all of them intact,” said Bob Hayes, public information director for the city’s Board of Public Works. “With all of the rains and the sewers running at full capacity, it can sometimes cause a break.”
City officials say their engineers plan to fix the sewer line, fill the sinkhole and repair the street within the next few days.
In the interim, transportation officials suggest drivers use Sepulveda and Jefferson boulevards.
