LONG BEACH : Food Bank Seeks Money for Flood Repairs
The Food Bank of Southern California, which was shut down temporarily by severe flooding two months ago, is seeking money to pay for repairs to its Long Beach warehouse and offices.
The nonprofit agency, which supplies food to 300 charitable organizations that feed the needy, estimates that it will cost more than $300,000 to return its San Francisco Avenue building to normal. It has received $250,000 in donations so far.
“The public has really responded to our crisis,†Food Bank President John Knapp said. “But we need more. We still have a lot of work to do.â€
The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation has donated $100,000 and Toyota Motor Sales contributed $50,000.
The food bank stopped distributing food for five days after heavy rains Jan. 4 left its warehouse and offices under four feet of water, destroying $1 million in food and damaging brick walls, carpets, the electrical system, computers, files and furniture.
Contributions may be sent to the Food Bank of Southern California, 1444 San Francisco Ave., Long Beach, 90813. Information: (310) 435-3577.
