MONTEREY PARK : Chu Named Chair of Census Advisory Group
Mayor Judy Chu has been voted to chair the U.S. Census Advisory Committee on Asian and Pacific Islander Populations.
Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown selected Chu, a Chinese American who is the mayor of the only city in the nation where a majority of residents are of Asian descent.
Chu’s committee peers elected her chairwoman of the group at a recent committee meeting at the Bureau of the Census headquarters in Suitland, Md.
The committee is a liaison between the communities its members represent and the Census Bureau. Its primary focus is to advise on efforts to achieve a more accurate count of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the decennial census in 2000.
Chu, who will serve on the committee until 1997, is a two-term council member in a city where 57.5% are of Asian descent, according to the 1990 Census.
