HUNTINGTON BEACH — An 85-year-old woman died Monday, a day after she was struck by the family car left running by her husband, police said.
Viola Marfia died at 7:35 a.m. at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Lt. Jim Cutshaw said. She suffered two broken legs Sunday after being pinned, along with her husband, by the car. Police said the cause of death is pending a coroner’s investigation.
James Marfia, 83, who had minor injuries, started the car about 6 p.m. and pulled it out of the couple’s garage in the 21400 block of Fleet Lane, Cutshaw said. James Marfia put the car in park gear, but while he was helping his wife to the car’s passenger side, the car rolled backward, hitting both of them, according to authorities.
